How to Make Aluminum Free Homemade Roll On Deodorant

Whether you’re committed to your early morning runs, spinning in your apartment, or binge-watching “Ozark” from your bedroom, keeping body odor in check is something that we can all appreciate, even if we’re self-isolating all alone during the pandemic. Thankfully, deodorants and antiperspirants can keep us smelling fresh.

“Deodorant protects against odor, but they do not decrease perspiration, while antiperspirants control sweat, which in turn also helps control odor,” explains dermatologist Dr. David Bank, founder, and director of The Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery in Westchester, New York. “Sweat in and of itself doesn’t have an odor, but the bacteria that thrives in these areas is what contributes to the odor. Deodorants can neutralize these smells with ingredients that make the area more acidic, hence hostile, to the bacteria.”

If you don’t sweat a ton, Banks recommends looking for so-called natural deodorants that have baking soda, cornstarch, and essential oils like lavender and eucalyptus, rather than aluminum. If you need more sweat protection, then swipe on an antiperspirant with aluminum to temporarily block sweat glands.

How to Make Aluminum Free Homemade Roll On Deodorant

I love my homemade deodorant. It’s just that simple. It’s cheap, made with great ingredients, and I can make it smell however I like.

Why Make Your Own DIY Deodorant

Many supermarket deodorant brands contain a number of horrible chemicals you are better off keeping away from. These include synthetic fragrances, aluminium, parabens, triclosan, TEA, DEA, and propylene glycol to name just a few. Plus most deodorants and antiperspirants meaning they are designed to stop you from sweating! This inhibits your body’s natural cleansing and detoxifying process. Our bodies were designed to sweat for a reason. Preventing this might lead to health implications later on.

Our DIY roll-on deodorant combines magnesium, witch hazel, sea salt, and your choice of essential oils to keep you feeling clean and fresh.

It is a great alternative to natural deodorants made with bi-carb soda. It is vegan, easy to make, and will help prevent and eliminate body odour fast.  Magnesium is naturally antibacterial while witch hazel’s dual ability to kill bacteria and rid skin of trapped moisture and oils means it is very effective in controlling body odour.

Ingredients

Instructions

The first step in making homemade roll-on deodorant is to mix the magnesium hydroxide with the water. Some of the magnesium may settle, so you'll have time to mix it again later.

Measure all the rest of the ingredients into a bowl and whisk together.

Add the magnesium water and whisk in as well. The arrowroot powder may want to clump up so you may need to work it a bit.

Once it's all mixed, pour into roll-on bottles and secure the top.

To use, shake the bottle and roll onto underarms. You can also use this recipe for under breast sweat, foot sweat, and back sweat.

The ingredients really make sense!

Witch Hazel

Witch Hazel is a great astringent.  That means it will close your pores and you will sweat less in your armpits.  Sweat is not a bad thing.  It helps release toxins from your body and cleanse your pores.  But we don’t necessarily want to sweat very much from our armpits because bacteria there begins to stink.

Baking Soda

Baking Soda is an odor and sweat absorber. Some people don’t like using baking soda. If you choose not to use it, you can replace it with more arrowroot powder. If it gets too thick, you can add a bit more distilled water.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is very healing to your skin and an anti-inflammatory.  Its soothing effects are wonderful in deodorants. Some people can’t use aloe vera in their homemade roll-on deodorant. You can substitute another gel if you like. Chia seed or flax seed gels work, but the mix will need to be kept refrigerated.

Which Essential Oils to Use

Essential Oils are great for killing bacteria and giving your body a smell that you choose instead.

For the essential oils, some good choices for a homemade roll-on deodorant would be Lavender, Tea Tree, Rosemary, or Grapefruit.

Notes

Remember, this is not an antiperspirant so it won't keep you dry, but it will help to minimize odors.
